Welcome Mike!  ZM's incoming director

As Jim lays down his duties with ZM, we warmly welcome Mike Beresford as the new Director.

Mike has been married to Bryony for over twenty years and they live in a small village just outside York with their two children, Jack and Lucy . They are active members of York Baptist Church where Mike has been a deacon for nearly ten years. He is often involved in a practical capacity looking after the fabric of the building or organising the construction of stage sets for the church's annual children's holiday club. Bryony teaches in Club Sunday classes and also helps lead the church youth club. At an early stage in their marriage they felt that the Lord was calling them to use their home to bless the Lord. Together they host and lead a house group which meets weekly in their home.

Mike has been in engineering project management for most of his working life having worked for a variety of oil and petrochemical companies, most recently ConocoPhillips at its Humber Refinery near Grimsby where he has been for nearly ten years. His work involved managing teams of individuals in order to deliver successful multi-million pound projects.

The Bereford family

Mike writes, "Through my prayer times, Bible study and general reading I felt challenged about my personal response to a world of poverty, hardship and real need. This led to studying for a Masters Degree in Community Water and Sanitation as I sought to use my engineering skills to serve others in the developing world.

Although I knew about Jim Hasnip's role within zm , and of his nearer retirement, it never entered my imagination that I might be the right person to take over his job. However, whilst reading the zm Update magazine in June 2011 I felt that there was just a possibility that I should apply for the role of Mission Director. After much prayer, two interviews and clear guidance from the Lord to myself, the ZM Trustees and to my family, I was welcomed to ZM in January."

As part of his research Mike made a number of visits to rural communities in Uganda with the determination to use his gifts and new skills to serve the poor and marginalised communities as far as he was able. He plans to make his first visit to Malawi at the end of March.

Teaching in Uganda

We do praise the Lord for giving Mike to the mission and we know that he and his family will be very glad of your prayer support as they adapt to the many challenges of his new role.
