Called - to be a volunteer !!

Most of ZM's work - and, indeed, most Christian work - is done by people who volunteer because they feel the Lord directing their paths in a certain way.

We are delighted that Rev Tom Jardine has recently felt that direction towards ZM to help as a voluntary representative in the UK. Here he takes a few lines to introduce himself.

Tom and Ann Jardine

Ann and I were born in Cumbria and have been blessed with parents who loved the Lord. In matters of faith the focus of our homes was an acceptance of the scriptures as the Word of God and the centrality of the cross and resurrection of Christ as our only means of salvation. Both of us came to a personal faith in Christ at an early age.

In 1979 we left Cumbria to serve the Lord in the London City Mission. Some years later, believing we were called to serve the Lord in ordained ministry, I trained at Oak Hill Theological College and was ordained curate at All Saints Crowborough in 1987. We went on to serve in three rural parishes in Norfolk and then for almost ten years prior to retirement in a parish in Southport.

In 2004 I received a letter from the Bishop of Liverpool suggesting that I give careful consideration to taking a period of study leave. Soon after receiving this letter I learned that Megumi Fazakerley, at that time Principal of the Evangelical Bible College of Malawi, was in the UK and staying not far from Southport. We had an afternoon together during which time he spoke about the work of the Zambesi Mission and invited me to spend some time at The Evangelical Bible College of Malawi.

I went to Malawi in 2005, and for ten weeks visited clinics, orphan day care centres, schools, pastors and Churches and taught at EBCoM. This visit made me aware that these people are in need of things we take for granted, such as food, medicine and education. Many pastors are poorly paid; for them and their families life seem to hang by a thread yet they serve the Lord with determination and joy. As I visited markets and walked around Blantyre I found an openness amongst people to speak about Christ and the Gospel.

This was a wonderful and life changing experience. In representing Zambesi Mission I want to encourage believers here to pray earnestly for those engaged in Gospel ministry and for all our brothers and sisters who live for Christ in that very needy country.

Tom and Ann now live in Bournemouth and Tom would be very happy to visit Churches or individuals in the region to share Bible ministry and news of the Church in Malawi and N.Mozambique.

We are thankful to God for all those He has prompted to help ZM support national believers in Malawi and Northern Mozambique,
but we need more helpers!

Perhaps you could be one of them.

You might not experience the call of God as clearly as did Isaiah before he 'volunteered' (Isaiah 6:8) - indeed, you might not sense His direction at all until you make a move towards involvement in a particular aspect of His work!

In your area
We need people who are able to contact individuals and Church Fellowships and visit to share God's Word and news of the Church in Malawi & N. Mozambique. The extent of your commitment would depend on your circumstances

In your Church
We could use someone willing to represent ZM within your Fellowship, by

  • Maintaining the profile of the church in Malawi
  • Highlighting latest news for prayer
  • Arranging a visit from a ZM speaker.
  • Managing a ZM project such as 'Recycling a Pastor', collecting stamps'
  • Generally, being the link between the Church and the Mission and helping to supporting the Church in Malawi

If you think you might be able to volunteer some help as a representative or in any of these other ways please get in touch.

We can then talk together and see how the Lord is directing us.
