Teaching those who will teach others

The Evangelical Bible College of Malawi will soon be welcoming two new members of staff. Kirsty and David Henry Kamyumi, with their son Ethan, are due to arrive in Malawi early next month and after, language study, David will join the lecturing staff at the college.

David was born in Tanzania in 1972, Kirsty in the UK in 1971 and Ethan July 2006 in Glasgow where they have been living in recent years. David and Kirsty met in Tanzania at the Nassa Theological College where David was undertaking a four year training programme for ministry, and Kirsty was training local Christians in nursery and women’s ministries. They married in July 2002 in Nassa, Tanzania, and came to the UK in August of that year. For the last four years David has been studying for a BA (Hons) in Theology at the International Christian College in Glasgow, while Kirsty has been a Pupil Support Assistant at a local secondary school.

During his study David has undertaken two placements, one was with Glasgow City Mission – reaching and serving homeless people. The other at Partick South Church of Scotland, which is one of their two main sending Churches. The other is Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh where Kirsty’s father serves as Elder responsible for Mission.

David and Kirsty write:

As a family we have been exploring what the next step is for us; David particularly has a heart for training others.

Throughout our time in Glasgow we had the idea that on completing the studies we would return to Tanzania, but after a trip back there two years ago we sensed God was saying something different. This took us by surprise, though we know from past Christian experience that trusting and obeying God is the only way to be happy in our walk with Him. So, we started the adventure of pushing various doors towards the role of training others for ministry in the Church in Africa.

In faith we responded to a ZM appeal and through the whole process of interview we have had the peace and assurance that we are going through the door the Lord has for us as a family at this particular time. We have now been appointed to work at EBCOM (Evangelical Bible College of Malawi).

Training leaders for the African Church

We believe that teaching a person about the Biblical characteristics of leadership is vital in helping Christ’s church in Africa flourish as God intends. Michael Green once rightly said, ‘Leaders are not above the church to dominate; they are beneath it to serve it’. This is clearly seen in Jesus’ character, attitude and teaching. We and all those called to be leaders in the African Church must obey Biblical teaching and learn from the great Shepherd, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

We are looking forward to being part of what God is doing with His Church in Malawi; in particular to helping others to learn more of Him and His purposes. Also learning about the culture and the life of the Church in Malawi. We know there will be many challenges and adjustments ahead including language learning and a busy college programme.

We thank God for Kirsty, David and Ethan and greatly appreciate prayer for them as they enter this new situation and take up this vital work

Please let us know if you would like to have regular news of them, and if you feel you could give them some support financially.
